Instead of rolling out a game every week, Nintendo is stocking the WiiWare store with nine games on day one. The other good news is not all of them are 1,500 Wii Points! Only Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King rings in at $15, which makes it the most expensive game on the shop. Arc System Works’ Okiraku Ping Pong Wii and Tenshi Solitaire (Angel Solitaire) cost the same as a Famicom game.

Rent-To-Own Wii

The Consumerist has a truly disgusting news item about a certain “Rent-To-Own” store where you can “lease” a Nintendo Wii for only $79 per month… for 12 months. Yeah, you done the math right… it’s ridiculous amount.

$79 x 12 months = $948.00

According to the site…

This $250 Wii console can be yours for only $79 a month, and after 12 months, it’s yours to keep. By that time, you will have paid $948 for it. By comparison, if you charged it to a credit card with 18% interest, you could pay $23 a month and have it paid off after 12 months. Kelly’s offer will cost you $673 more than paying with the credit card.

Just keep this in mind, for the utterly stupid price of $948 you could almost buy 4 Nintendo Wiis at the retail price of $250.

Nintendo to charge for Online Play!

Nintendo has confirmed that it will begin charging for online services for some games on the Wii.

A Nintendo representative told SPOnG, “Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection offers simple, comfortable and free enjoyment of games played over an internet connection, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play offers paid for services whilst keeping the simple and comfortable elements we know people enjoy. Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play allows for flexible adaptation to content and system costs and allows for even higher quality services.” (more…)

Wii Maintenance Mode

You may be already aware of this, but the Wii has a maintenance mode that can be accessed by pushing the + and - buttons and then pushing A at start up. I just got a reply from Nintendo about an Inquiry. Feel free to post it. Here is the message unedited:

At this time, the “Maintenance Mode” you discovered has no functionality for consumers. If at some future point a consumer application for this mode is made available, it will be revealed on our website (www.nintendo.com).

Even though it appears—with the exception of the Wii Message Board—that everything functions normally in this mode, we do not recommend using it at this time.

The Twilight Hack works by employing a lengthly character name for the horse in the game (’Epona’) in order to facilitate a stack smash. This gets triggered when talking to the man next to you when you start the savegame as he loads the name to use it in his dialog or upon entering the next zone when the game loads the horse for you to ride.

Skiing Coming To Nintendo Wii In May

Friday, Namco revealed to IGN that the game would be coming to North America in May, and another method of control will be the Wii Fit Balance Board.

Not coincidentally, Wii Fit will be released at almost the exact same time.

“Using the Balance Board takes more practice. You’ll still push with the Wiimote and Nunchuk but steering is handled by leaning left and right,” reports the website. ”

A balance meter at the bottom of the screen indicates where your weight is resting. It was a little easier to over-compensate, as noted above, but we imagine with practice handling turns will become more manageable.”
